Balance with Animals
“One thing to remember is to talk to the animal.  If you do, they will talk back to you.  But if you don’t talk to the animals, they won’t talk back to you, then you won’t understand, and when you don’t understand you will fear and when you fear you will destroy the animals, and if you destroy the animals, you will destroy yourself.” (Chief Dan George)   We two legged animals have incredible influence in assuring or destroying the lives of other being on Mother Earth.  How often do we think about, listen for, and truly hear their voices?  Who speaks for the Hawk, Who speaks for the Wolf, Who speaks for the four legged, the many legged, the winged ones, the crawling ones, and the swimming ones? Who speaks for the plants?  Do you or I?  Who at the round tables of the government or lodges of the world speaks for these?  What are their policies for them?  It is our duty as principle people to speak daily to the animals and let them know that we are their friends.  We should see to it as our duty to speak as caretakers for the natural world.  Our process is of living together with our animal friends, the principle being that all is equal.  The principle has been lost; the two-legged walks about thinking that he is supreme with his man made laws.  There are universal laws of all living things.  We know that they have rights also.
This sensitivity to all the creatures of Mother Earth needs to be a part of each of our lives.  Even the Christians told us that when Jesus commanded people to follow the golden rule and to love your neighbors as yourself; he didn’t specify to only love your two-legged neighbors.  Balance is opening our hearts and minds to all those living beings who share Mother Earth.
If we are to truly learn to live in balance and harmony on Mother Earth, we must find room in our hearts and minds for all beings:  the two-legged, the four- legged, the birds of there air, the fish in the seas, the critters that live in the ravines behind our homes, the countless creatures inhabiting the rainforests who may have much to reach us about cooperation and healing, and all the countless beings whom we are unaware of.
Surely our lives are a time to learn about relationships and that includes our relationship to the other animals that live on Mother Earth.  The more conscious and caring we become about all of the Creator’s creation, the more our lives will reflect that balance which we are trying obtain.
All people who have roots or a deep relationship still intact in their lives regard the four-legged, the winged ones, the swimming beings, and crawling beings as their brothers and sisters, embodying a unique and special gift from the Creator.  We honor the swiftness of the Hawk, the clear seeing of the Eagle, the playfulness of the Dolphin, the craftiness of the Raccoon.  Each creature offers such quality, gifts and respect to humanity and the world.  Why don’t we two-legged creatures do unto them as they do unto us?  Each encounter with an Eagle, Crow, Bear, Coyote, and Wolf, or any other living being should be considered as meaningful revelation to us.  When we require medicine gifts of a specific animal, the wise ones often fast, pray, and seek guidance from the spirit of these creatures.  If you listen carefully enough to anything, it will talk to you.
Through the ongoing experiment of evolution our planet has seen countless creatures come and go.  Yet in the past hundred years, one species –humans- has obliterated and destroyed tens of thousands of species who will never be seen or accounted for again upon Mother Earth. We in ignorance have robbed and stolen their right of inheritance on terra firma. Many other species are injected with hormones so they may become fat and then slaughtered and fed to the public.  This is also slaughtering mankind with unclean meat and additives.  This might be Mother Nature’s way of striking back toward our onslaught of our brothers and sisters.  Even in our own modern times, our relationship with animals offers many lessons in balance and often opens doors into the vital, mythical dimensions of our lives.  Let’s take a moment to consider this?  What animals appear most frequently to you in your dreams or in your visions or everyday life?  What qualities or strengths do they represent to you?
When you are walking in the woods, when you are driving to work, when you are sitting and watching nature do you ever see deer, eagles, raccoon, crows, bears, hawks or any other animals.  Listen deeply to see if there is a message for you in that unsuspected encounter.  Have you ever saw crows chasing a hawk, or have you ever saw a hawk chasing an eagle? There is a message to be learned from this encounter.  You must open your eyes and spirit to understand. Eagle-Spirit:  Eagle medicine is the power of the Great Spirit, the connection to the Divine.  It is the ability to live in the realm of spirit, and yet remain connected and balanced within the realm of Mother Earth.  Eagle soars and is quick to observe expansiveness within the overall pattern of life.  From heights of the clouds, Eagles are close to the heavens where the Great Spirit dwells.  Hawk-Messenger:  Hawk is akin to Mercury, the messenger of the Gods.  Hawk medicine teaches you to be observant, to look at your surroundings.  Observe the obvious in everything you do.  The Great Spirit is speaking to your life through these animals if you can open your mind and spirit to receive.  If you can think like this then you can find peace of mind when you see other animal brother and sisters and learn to appreciate them more abundantly.  In your journey toward balance remember to keep the animals, “our brothers and sisters”, in mind as you make choices in the products that you buy, the clothing you wear, and the food you eat.  Keep asking yourself, what would living with all these creatures of Mother Earth look like to me?  Are my choices creating more balance or imbalance, more joy or sorrow, in the lives of others?   Remember what Chief Seattle said:  What we do to the animals we do to ourselves.  More balance issues to follow…
